Univision edges out networks on repeat-heavy night (omg!)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - If Univision has its way, the future will look a lot like last night: Aided by repeat-heavy slates on the Big 4 networks, the Spanish-language network edged out CBS for the highest overall ratings of the night.

The finale of popular novela "La Fuerza del Destino" scored a 2.3 rating/6 share and 5.4 million total viewers from 8-10 p.m. An interview with the cast at 10 on "Don Francisco Presenta" scored a 1.5/4 and 3.6 million total viewers. The ratings averaged out to a 2.0 overall for the night, just ahead of CBS's 1.9 average for a night of all reruns.

Even in reruns, CBS still had the highest-rated show of the night: "Two and a Half Men" at 9 scored a 2.4/6. It was also the most-watched show with 8.1 million total viewers. But other shows lowered its overall average to just below Univision's.

Univision has long aimed to be the most-watched network in any language by the middle of the decade. Of course, it will typically face much stiffer competition than it will this slow holiday week.

The highest-rated new network show Monday was NBC's "Who's Still Standing" at 8, which earned a 1.7/5 and 6.9 million total viewers. NBC aired a "Fear Factor" repeat at 9, followed by a new episode of "30 Rock With Brian Williams" at 10, which earned a .9/2 and 3.5 million total viewers. NBC came in behind CBS, averaging a 1.4 over the night, despite offering the most new programming of the night, and NBC's numbers were likely inflated by local sports pre-emptions.

ABC's "You Deserve It" at 9 scored a 1.0/3 and 3.6 million total viewers. Otherwise the network ran repeats. It averaged a .9, and its numbers were also likely inflated by pre-empts.

Fox aired repeats throughout the night and averaged a .8 rating.

NEW YORK ? There was joy again at Madison Square Garden on Sunday, a blend of holiday cheer, pent-up anticipation and the thrill of the NBA's belated return after a long, strange offseason. The joy gave way to anxiety, then a bit of nastiness.

But it ended with a final burst of merriment and a 106-104 Knicks victory over the Boston Celtics in the NBA's first game since June.

Carmelo Anthony, playing in his first opening day as a Knick, scored 37 points, including the go-ahead free throws with 16.3 seconds left. The debut of the Knicks' towering new frontcourt was a success, with Amare Stoudemire adding 21 points and Tyson Chandler providing just enough paint presence to make it all stand up.

Shumpert injured

Knicks rookie guard Iman Shumpert is expected to miss two to four weeks because of a sprained right knee ligament.

The first-round pick from Georgia Tech was hurt in the second half of New York?s 106-104 victory over Boston on Sunday when Celtics reserve Chris Wilcox appeared to bang into his leg. The Knicks say Shumpert sprained his MCL.

Shumpert scored 11 points on 3-of-13 shooting in 22 minutes in his debut.

With Baron Davis unavailable for a while with a herniated disc in his back, Shumpert was expected to provide minutes at both guard spots.

The Knicks were already short-handed in the backcourt with Mike Bibby sidelined by a sore back. Also, forward Jared Jeffries left with a sore right calf and could miss a week or two.

The Associated Press

Along the way, the Knicks built and squandered a 17-point lead, lost Iman Shumpert to a knee injury and, most significant, got the attention of a Celtics team that played without Paul Pierce.

"We showed something today," Anthony said. "This is a new beginning for us."

Anthony carried the Knicks for long stretches and was dominant when it mattered most, scoring 17 points in the fourth quarter. He was efficient, too, going 10-for-17 from the field and 13-or-15 from the foul line, while grabbing eight rebounds. His only blemish was in the turnover column, with five.

The Knicks were fortunate to get the victory after giving up 35 points in the third quarter, when the Celtics turned a 12-point deficit into an 8-point lead. They tightened the defense in the fourth quarter, holding Boston to 17 points, then rode Anthony's hot hand to the finish.

"We fought," Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni said. "It's not always going to be pretty, especially early. And we got to get as many wins as we can by the spirit of the team."

The Christmas afternoon ended with a snarl, and the Celtics' Kevin Garnett striking the Knicks' Bill Walker with an open hand to the throat. Garnett had missed a potential game-tying jumper on the game's final possession with Walker defending. After the buzzer, Walker started to approach Garnett, who responded with venom. Teammates quickly separated them to prevent a fight.

Short, fast, and frequent: Those 21st-century demands on publication have radically changed the news, politics, and culturefor the worse, many say. Now an article in January's Perspectives on Psychological Science, a journal published by the Association for Psychological Science, aims a critique at a similar trend in psychological research. The authors, psychologists Marco Bertamini of the University of Liverpool and Marcus Munaf of the University of Bristol, call it "bite-size science"papers based on one or a few studies and small samples.

"We're not against concision," says Bertamini. "But there are real risks in this trend toward shorter papers. The main risk is the increased rates of false alarms that are likely to be associated with papers based on less data."

The article dispatches several claimed advantages of shorter papers. Proponents say they're easier to read. Perhaps, say the authors, but more articles mean more to keep up with, more reviewing and editingnot less work. Proponents laud the increased influence authors gain from more citations. Precisely, say the twobut two short papers do not equal twice the scientific value of a longer one. Indeed, they might add up to less.

The reason: The smaller the experimental sample the greater the statistical deviationsthat is, the greater the inaccuracy of the findings. The results are sometimes flukes, with a bias toward false positiveserrors a wider ranging study with multiple experiments, plus replication in the same and in other labs, could correct. Strict word limits, moreover, mean cutting the details about previous research. The new results sound not only surprising but also novel. Write the authors: "A bit of ignorance helps in discovering 'new' things."

These surprising, "novel" results are exactly what editors find exciting and newsworthy and what even the best journals seek to publish, say the authors. The mainstream media pick up the "hot" stories. And the wrong results proliferate.

"Scientists are skeptics by training," says Bertamini. But the trend toward bite-size science leaves no time or space for that crucial caution. And that, argue the authors, is antithetical to good science.

Archos launches 70b Honeycomb tablet, expected to ship next month for $199

There's something good waiting in the desert at CES -- and you won't need an interesting vision quest to find it. Archos has announced its 70b Internet Tablet, the company's first Honeycomb-based slate, for $199. The 70b IT will be lightweight (though we're not sure exactly how lightweight), and will ship with a 1.2 GHz processor, a higher resolution capacitive touchscreen (1024 x 600), 8 gigs of flash storage, 512MB of RAM and WiFi connectivity. There's also Android Market access, unlike with some tablets, along with HDMI output and a microSD port. Are you sold? You'll need wait only a few more weeks to take one home -- the 70b is expected to hit stores in January for $199, and those of you lucky enough to be trekking out to Vegas next month can check it out at the company's booth at CES. Jump past the break for the full PR.

The Best Hike On Mars You'll Ever Take

It took five years, three months and 27 days, but you can do it all in three minutes. Here, from start to finish, is what the NASA rover "Spirit" sniffed, bopped, scratched and saw as it moved across 4.8 miles of the Martian surface.

The lens is wide-angled, so the horizon always looks like a curved mountain top; every so often a one-armed probe, looking weirdly lobster-like, will suddenly appear, noodle around, poke, tap or sift through the Martian soil.

Towards the end you'll catch glimpses of the sun setting, (same sun! different set! I thought.) until Spirit gets stuck in the Martian muck and then, dramatically, everything goes dark. The folks who edited this together added movie music, which makes it really fun to watch. This is the best low-res, low-priced, low energy Martian hike you'll ever take.

And, for those of us who like this kind of thing, we're going back! Next summer, on Aug. 5, a Jeep-sized vehicle-laboratory thingy called Curiosity will ? we hope ? land on Mars. Our search for Little Green Men will resume.

Except nobody's looking for those any more. Instead, the hunt is on for very teeny Martians, shaped like itsy bitsy rods, that look (on Saturday morning tv, anyway) something like this...

Methanogens Illustration

Benjamin Arthur for NPR

Methanogens are very primitive microorganisms that both produce and consume methane. When you come close to a swamp and catch the smell of "marsh gas," that's methanogens doing their methaney thing.

And not too long ago, we discovered there are at least five places on Mars that also leak methane. Lots of it. At one location, NASA scientist Michael Mumma found 20,000 metric tons of methane in big "plumes" hanging in Mars' summertime northern hemisphere. They are new emissions, because on Mars, methane disintegrates pretty quickly in the atmosphere.

So why care about swamp gas on Mars?

Well, here on Earth, 90 percent of our methane comes from living things (farting cows, for example) or from dead, decaying, formerly living things. The other ten percent comes from not-so-exciting rocks leaching gas when in contact with moving water. In other words: on Earth, methane is evidence of life 90 percent of the time.

But on Mars? That's the question.

If we find Martian methanogens dead or alive, then we have just discovered life elsewhere in the universe. That's a biggie. And Micheal Mumma has a hunch they might be living right now below the Martian surface, deep down, or under a blanket of ice, or maybe they died and the methane from their decay is trapped down there, and every so often escapes.

Here's the dream scenario for those of us who wanted to meet Little Green Men, but have to settle for micro-Martians instead: (I found it in Marc Kaufman's wonderful new book First Contact.) We go to Mars. We scoop up some frozen Martian soil buried under the surface. We add a little heat, and frozen bits of dirt suddenly stir, and we look closely...and...Hello Martians!

This very thing happened here on Earth. As Marc describes it, NASA astrobiologist Richard Hoover found microbes deep in an Alaskan tunnel at a level that contained life buried for 32,000 years.

They were inactive in the ground, but when warmed they came alive and even moved and, if they were methanogens, began to produce methane. Something similar could happen on Mars.

We wish. That's why the new vehicle, Curiosity, will try to detect methane this summer, as will the probes that follow it later in the decade. And that's why those of us who hope to be around for a first encounter with alien life will be biting our fingernails for the next decade, hoping it happens while we're still here. I mean what could be more exciting?

Well, there's this: Hans Ulrich Kaufl, a NASA scientist and colleague of Michael Mumma, is quoted in the book saying (tongue in cheek) what if we get to Mars, find a plume of methane gas, follow it to its source, look closely and discover "large herds of farting cows"?

Martian cows

Benjamin Arthur for NPR

Now that would be awesome.

Science reporter and national editor at the Washington Post Marc Kaufman's new book is called First Contact; Scientific Breakthroughs in the Hunt for Life Beyond Earth (Simon and Schuster, 2011) Michael Mumma talks about methane on Mars in this short, nicely animated NASA video.

Apple appeals Samsung tablet ruling, Galaxy Tab 10.1 sales still blocked in Australia

As expected, Apple has decided to appeal a ruling on its injunction blocking the sale of Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Australia to the High Court. The means Samsung cannot start selling its slates at 4PM as a lower court had decided, and puts the devices on ice until at least December 9th. What, you thought that after months of litigation in multiple countries, you thought either side would just walk away from this? We'll see you all back here in a week or so for the next incremental legal happening.

In order to improve your chances of making money playing poker, you must be able to capitalize on the money lying in the pots after the flop comes down. While stealing the blinds pre-flop is an important part of any poker game, post flop play will typically yield the biggest pots.

Post-flop play stems from 3 basic scenarios that are a result of the pre-flop action. Those scenarios are:

* No action ? This scenario is a result of everyone at the table folding to the pre-flop raiser or re-raiser, or of everyone folding to the Big Blind.

* Heads up action ? When only 2 players see the flop, the resulting action will be heads up.

* Multi-way action ? When 3 or more players see the flop, this results in multi-way post flop action, or a ?multi-way pot.?

No Action

No action ? Nothing much to explore here. No post-flop action is the result of pre-flop play where all but one player folds. In this case, no flop is dealt, and therefor there is no post-flop action. Congratulations, you just saved some chips!

Heads Up Action

Heads up action ? When there is post-flop action, this type of action is the preferred scenario of any professional or serious poker player. Heads up action is simply easier to play. Bluffs and semi-bluffs are successful a higher percentage of the time than in multi-way pots. It is easier to get a read on your opponent?s hand strength. Often in heads up action, pots can be won with low to middle pairs or even high-card hands.

The keys to successful post-flop play include position and aggression. Successful post-flop play will depend largely in part on your pre-flop choices. You will win more pots playing from position than you will out of position. You will win more pots when you are the aggressor (the bettor or raiser) than you will by checking and calling. Therefor, one of the most effective improvements you can make to your post-flop play may be an adjustment to your pre-flop stratgey. Open with aggressive raises from superior position to improve your post-flop winning percentage. By coming out aggressively pre-flop and playing from position, a multitude of different ways that you can win the pot will open up to you.

The most important tool you will have at your disposal will be the continuation bet. This is when a player raises pre-flop, and then fires another bet into the pot after the flop, whether or not the flop improved the raiser?s hand. When you enter into a heads up pot with a preflop raise, you should follow through with a continuation bet 75%-90% of the time, regardless of what flopped. Your opponent will completely miss the flop roughly 70% of the time, and your continuation bet will win you the pot the in most cases.

Another tool that a pre-flop raise from postion will give you is the semi-bluff. This is when you flop a draw, such as a straight or flush draw, and bet or even raise as though you have a made hand. If you get called and then hit on the turn, you are likely to get paid off in a big way! Even if you miss on the turn, you?ll still have a free shot at the draw most of the time. Your opponent usually will not bet on the turn because either (a) he will be afraid of facing another big raise, or (b) will have the best hand, and will be anticipating (and probably hoping for) another bet from you on the turn. Take advantage of this oppotunity to see a free river by checking the turn if it?s a blank.

You can also utilize ?feeler bets,? which are bets or raises to determine the strength of your opponent?s hand or the strength of your hand in relation to theirs. While you are spending some chips in this situation, try to avoid thinking to much about your ?lost chips? when facing an opponent who is giving you clues to the fact that they have you beat. The reason you are putting out small feeler bets is to save yourself large amounts of chips if you?re hand is beat.

Multi-way Action

Multi-way action ? Multi-way pots are typically the most difficult to play, and should be avoided in most situations whenever possible, especially if playing from out of position. Multi-way pots can be good to play in, however, with drawing hands or small to medium pocket pairs. The reason is that if you flop a monster with a disguised hand, you?re more likely to get paid off as someone in the hand is likely to have a hand that is strong enough to call you with, even if it is 2nd best. If you were to flop a set with a small pair or a a flush or a straight with a suited connector, you?ll have plenty of players in the hand who might have top-pair-top-kicker, 2 pair, or a draw that may be willing to pay you off even if you fire a huge bet.

If you do flop a draw in a multi-way pot, tricky plays aren?t as likely to work. Stick to good pot odds to chase a draw. If the price isn?t right, throw the hand away. You will find good pot odds often enough in multi-way pots to make it worth throwing away a few draws when the odds are against you.

Poker Tournaments ? Mtt Strategy

When it comes to Multi-Table Tournament (MTT) play, the most important role that you must play if you want to win is to play the extreme opposite of how the other players are playing. When your opponents are playing tight and doing alot of folding, you should be raising, raising, rasing! When they are playing fast and loose and throwing chips all over the place with weak hands, you should play tight, wait for strong hands and favorable pot odds, and preserve your chips.

Arpaio, Seagal deny dog killing claim during raid (AP)

PHOENIX ? Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio and actor Steven Seagal deny accusations by a Phoenix man and his lawyer that a family dog was killed during a raid for Seagal's reality TV show.

The sheriff's office said in a news release the allegation is without merit. Seagal added he's outraged.

The action movie actor was participating in the raid as a special deputy sheriff for his show "Steven Seagal Lawman" on the A&E cable channel. His movie credits include "Under Siege," "Above the Law" and "Fire Down Below."

Seagal and numerous deputies and posse members were present March 9 during a raid at the home of Jesus Llovera. In the claim, Llovera says an 11-month-old puppy was killed along with 100 roosters.

According to witnesses at the raid, a dog was present on Llovera's property when deputies and SWAT team members, including Seagal, entered the premises with a search warrant to arrest Llovera on cockfighting charges and seize all evidence pertaining to the crime.

Arpaio said there's no evidence to back up the claim that his officers killed a dog.

"If my deputies, or posse man Seagal for that matter, had done something so awful like shooting a family dog, then where are the photos to prove it?" Arpaio asked.

Llovera's attorney, Robert Campos, told The Associated Press Friday his client didn't accuse Steven Seagal of killing an animal on his property in a notice of claim filed against the sheriff's office.

"My client never accused Seagal of having anything to do with the death of his puppy," Campos said. "He (Llovera) just wanted an apology from Seagal for his role in the destruction of my client's home, property and animals."

In Llovera's claim, the sheriff's office and Seagal are accused of setting off explosives to create a distraction and confusion. The claim says Seagal was free to commandeer a tank and crash through an iron gate on the southeast corner of Llovera's property in southwest Phoenix.

In an interview with KTAR Radio in Phoenix during the March raid, Seagal said he was there to help guard one side of Llovera's house.

"We're just sort of, you know, trying to guard one side of the house and see if anybody would run out or anything like that or, do anything worse than that," Seagal said. "We're kind of just doing that and I didn't really enter the house today."

Llovera is seeking $25,000 against the sheriff's office for humiliation, emotional distress and property damage.

Relocating to Lexington, KY | Realtor Seo Leads

Posted by?admin?on?Friday, September 2nd 2011?????

Lexington (officially Lexington-Fayette Urban County) is the 2nd -largest city in Kentucky and the 65th largest in the United States. Known as the ?Thoroughbred City? and the ?Horse Capital of the World?, it is situated in the heart of Kentucky?s Bluegrass region . In 2009 the city?s population was approximatly at 296,545?? anchoring a metropolitan area of 470,849 people? and a Combined Statistical Area of 688,707 people.

Lexington ranks 10th among US cities in college education rate, with 39.5% of residents having at least a Bachelor?s Degree. It is home to the headquarters ofKentucky Horse Park, Lexmark International , Keeneland race course, Red Mile race course , University of Kentucky, Transylvania University and Bluegrass Community & Technical College.

Lexington has been selected to be the site of the 2010 FEI World Equestrian Games.

Lexington was founded in June 1775 in what was then Virginia (17 years before Kentucky became a state in 1792). A party of frontiersmen, led by William McConnell, camped on the Middle Fork of Elkhorn Creek (today called Town Branch and rerouted under Vine Street) at the location known today as McConnell Springs. Upon hearing of the colonists? victory in the Battles of Lexington and Concord, on April 19, 1775, they named their campsite Lexington after Lexington, Massachusetts. Due to the danger of Indian attacks, permanent settlement was delayed for four years. In 1779, Colonel Robert Patterson and 25 companions came from Fort Harrod and built a blockhouse. Cabins and a stockade were soon built, making the fort, known as Bryan Station, a place of importance . Colonists protected it against aAmerican indian and British attack in 1782, during the last part of the American Revolution. The town of Lexington was established on May 6, 1782, by an act of the Virginia General Assembly.

By 1820, it was one of the largest and most affluent towns west of the Allegheny Mountains. So cultured was its lifestyle that Lexington gained the nickname ?Athens of the West?. One early important citizen, John Wesley Hunt, became the first millionaire west of the Alleghenies. Planters held slaves for use as artisans and laborers, field hands and domestic servants. In 1850, 1/5 of the state?s population were slaves, and Lexington had the highest concentration of slaves in the state.

Many of 19th-century America?s most important people spent part of their lives in the city, including both American president Abraham Lincoln and Confederate President Jefferson Davis (who attended Transylvania University in 1823 and 1824), Civil War General John Hunt Morgan, US senator and vice president John C. Breckinridge, and US Senator and presidential candidate Henry Clay, who had a plantation nearby. Lincoln?s wife, Mary Todd Lincoln, was born and raised in Lexington; the couple visited the city several times after their marriage in 1842.

In 1935 Lexington founded one of the first drug rehabilitation clinics, known as the ?Addiction Research Center?. The first alcohol and drug rehabilitation hospital in the United States was also known as ?Narco? of Lexington, as well as the ?Addiction Research Center?. This was later converted into a federal prison.

Microsoft?s Interpretation Of ?No Compromise? Is The Definition Of ?Compromise?

compromise_2On one hand, you have to give Windows chief?Steven Sinofsky some credit, he's being very open, proactive, and engaged leading up to Microsoft's unveiling of Windows 8. And that's great. But on the other hand, you have to wonder if he's in the process of burying himself in a very big hole. Over the past couple of days, the Internet has let out a collective "gasp" at the sight of the new Windows Explorer. So today, Sinofsky has responded with his own thoughts about the design of Windows 8. The theme he wants his post to have is very clear: "no compromise" ? he says it four separate times. Unfortunately, the theme that actually comes across is the exact opposite.

Hair, there and everywhere - Beauty, Health and Fitness

Hair. It?s hard to imagine just how many hours go into maintaining it! Women spend hours combing, teasing, colouring, straightening, curling, extending, tweezing, waxing and cutting it. Hair can be our shining crowning glory, or the catalyst for a bad hair day, making us want to curl up and dye. Why not let a mobile beauty therapist tend to your hair, leaving you with more time to worry about the things that really matter?

Staying sleek and smooth

Luscious, thick hair is something we all aspire to own ? but only on the head. Unwanted hair in areas we?d rather not see it can be irritating and troublesome to keep on top of. Keeping a regular appointment with a mobile beauty therapist?who comes to you in the privacy of your own home is the best way to make sure you?re never caught out in a hairy situation.

Do 'green buildings' come with a higher price tag?

Do "green buildings" sell and rent for a price premium? This LA Times article discusses some recent research on this topic including my solar paper (joint with Costa, Dastrup and Graff-Zivin). Using hedonic pricing techniques and data from Sacramento County and San Diego County in California, we find that solar panels increase a home's resale price by roughly 3.5%. John Quigley and co-authors such as Nils Kok have written several papers documenting that commercial real estate that is certified as "green" either by LEED or Energy Star sells and rents for a price premium.
The economics of this energy capitalization is pretty straightforward. Some predictions;
1. If the price of electricity is higher in a local area, then the energy efficiency price premium will be larger.
2. If environmentalists live in such an area (i.e Berkeley), there will be more "green buildings" built. Whether the price premium will be larger hinges on the shape of the supply curve. If there are many green architects working in liberal/green areas, then the higher demand in such areas may not translate into a price premium (hint: think of a flat supply curve).
3. Many energy efficiency strategies are hard for a potential buyer to detect. A potential buyer of a home is unlikely to ask the previous resident for his typical electricity bill. Even if such a nerd requests such a document, family j may learn little about what its energy bills will be from seeing family m living in the same house. In the absence of "energy labels" for homes that certify its energy efficiency, residential energy efficiency is unlikely to be capitalized into resale values. Holland and Singapore have introduced such ratings systems and Nils Kok and John Quigley have evaluated these.
4. If the price of electricity is high, then new construction will be more energy efficient. See Costa and Kahn 2011.

New Arrival Titleist 712 AP1 Irons Review

The new Titleist 712 AP1 Irons have finally arrived and been ready for purchase now on the market, though I heard that they will be released in October. With the arrival of the new 712 AP line which include the Titleist AP1, AP2, CB and MB irons, they are believed to be better than the previous 710 line.

Why They Are Called ?Titleist 712??

For those that are not familiar with the way series are numbered, the 712 is used to designate this particular series. Keeping with tradition the 7 represents the irons and the 12 represents the year in which they were manufactured. This means, they are prepared for 2012.

Refined Designs Under Strict Standards

The Tour Department at Titleist has been working together with the Brand Ambassadors of the company during the last season.

They have put together strict standards and specifications that the Titleist 712 AP1 Irons must meet in order to stand up to the quality expected by the company.

Working with leadership teams, and the companies research and development teams; golfers play an important part if getting the product out on the market. They are asked to look at all of the different parts of the irons while testing the fit and operation. Professional golfers from all over the globe have input into the refining process.

The Progressive Blade Length Is A New Breakthrough

While the heads of the Titleist 712 AP1 Irons?are the same size as their predecessors, their most significant new feature is a progressive blade length. "The long irons are about the same size," said Chris McGinley, Titleist's vice president of golf club marketing. "But as you go through the set, we brought the blade size down. That lets us make the long irons more forgiving and the short irons more traditional."

Conclusion

Generally speaking, they are good performers to help you achieve your goal. Players on the PGA Tour have already tried the?new iron set and they gave us a good feedback about the clubs. You can put them in your test list.
