Months after Gingerbread's arrival, HTC Sense remains fussy, users can't get no satisfaction

Many HTC Sense users have experienced less than ideal conditions ever since their upgrade to Gingerbread. In an issue that's likely tied to the operating system's new memory management techniques, we've seen the launcher sporadically restart upon return to the home screen, and in rarer cases, cause Sense to revert entirely to its factory settings. While the glitch is hardly new, it's rather well documented and the longstanding nature demands a proper (and expedient) update from HTC. Until that moment comes, we've included a few tips to help affected users get through the day.

First, the most straightforward solution involves using an alternate launcher, such as ADW, Go or LauncherPro. If you want to keep Sense and its goodies, you can try to keep widget use to a minimum, but if you're willing to gain root access, the command "echo ro.HOME_APP_ADJ=1 >/data/local.prop" has also proven successful at holding Sense in memory. Of course, dropping Sense entirely and replacing it with an AOSP ROM is another solution. Regardless of which route you choose, we hope you'll sound off in the comments and join us in the call for an update.

Considered one of the leading half-pipe athletes in the world, the 29-year-old was airlifted to Salt Lake City last Tuesday after falling during a half-pipe run in Park City, Utah.

"Sarah passed away peacefully surrounded by those she loved. In accordance with Sarah's wishes, her organs and tissues were donated to save the lives of others," family spokeswoman Iris Yen said in a written statement released to Reuters.

Burke, who was married to fellow skier Rory Bushfield, had surgery last Wednesday at the University of Utah hospital.

Yen said Burke had been training for upcoming winter events at the time of the accident.

"Our hearts go out to Sarah's husband Rory and her entire family. It's difficult for us to imagine their pain and what they're going through," Peter Judge, chief executive of the Canadian Freestyle Ski Association, said in a statement.

"Sarah was certainly someone who lived life to the fullest and in doing so was a significant example to our community and far beyond," Judge said. "She will be greatly missed by all of us at the CFSA and the entire ski community."

Yen said Burke's family "was moved by the sincere and heartfelt sympathy expressed by people inspired by Sarah from all around the world." A public celebration of Burke's life would be held in the coming weeks, she added.

Burke reached the podium at every career World Cup start and is a four-time champion at the X-Games, according to the ski association.

BMW's Designworks USA, Thermaltake reveal Level 10 M gaming mouse concept

Themaltake and BMW's DesignworksUSA are apparently a design-team match made in PC gaming heaven. After previously partnering up for the elegant (and functional) Level 10 modular PC case, the two are back it again -- this time with a focus on peripherals. While details are sparse, the Level 10 M mouse concept you're looking at is the first of the bunch to be revealed, and it's said to arrive sometime during the spring. It's not exactly a shoe-in for MadCatz's Rats, but considering the wire and an aggressively breathable design, it's clearly aimed pro-gamers. Sadly, key specs like its DPI rating and details about any macro functionality are currently non-existent, however, it does appear to be of the optical variety. Here's to hoping it'll perform just as good at as looks to the eyes, and for now, hit up the press release past the break for a totally vague description.

Gingrich says he's best bet in GOP to beat Obama (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich says he thinks his performance in debate against fellow Republicans shows he's best qualified to take on President Barack Obama in the fall.

Gingrich tells "CBS This Morning" the party will need a first-rate debater against Obama because he has ample money and the trappings of the presidency.

The Georgia Republican concedes it will be harder to head off Mitt Romney if he gets over 40 percent of the vote in South Carolina's primary Saturday. But he says Republicans "need somebody who is a solid conservative who can stand toe to toe with Obama and defeat him in the debates."

Gingrich says votes for Rick Perry or Rick Santorum "would be wasted" because neither has a chance to block Romney's path to the nomination.

Apple takes its recycling programme across to the UK, might pay for your old stuff

It looks like Apple loves recycling so very much, it's taking it across the Atlantic. The UK will also get to some cash for their technological old rope, with the Reuse and Recycling programme arriving to take that pesky dated tech off your hands -- and remunerate you for the effort. The news arrives not long after Apple published its annual responsibilty report, detailing its eco efforts across its supply chain. The project extends across iPods, iPhones, iPads, Macs and PCs -- and it doesn't even matter if they work. The program will assess whether there's cash value somewhere in it and will either credit your account or offer up free recycling options. Check the source to see whether your device qualifies, and just wait for the money to roll in.

Arm in a Sling? Your Brain Knows & Compensates (LiveScience.com)

An injured arm can do more than throw a person off balance, it can also change the brain. A new study shows that when a person has a cast or sling on their dominant hand, brain areas responsible for compensating for the injured side bulk up.

The researchers also saw decreases in the size of brain areas furloughed because of the cast.

Researchers studied 10 right-handed people who had injured their upper right arm and had to wear a cast or sling for at least 14 days, restricting that hand to little or no movement during that time period. Because of the slings, the participants had to use their nondominant left hand for all daily activities, such as using a toothbrush, eating or writing.

None of the study participants had a brain injury, nerve injury or psychiatric disease. Researchers took magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of the subjects' brains to measure the amount of gray and white matter in the brain within two days of the injury and then 16 days after they began wearing the sling. The researchers also tested the participants' motor skills, including their arm-hand and wrist-finger movements.

The MRI scans revealed a decrease of up to 10 percent in the amount of gray and white matter in the left side of the brain ? the side of the brain responsible for the movement of the restricted right hand. However, the amount of gray and white matter in the right side of the brain increased in size, according to the findings.

"We also saw improved motor skills in the left, non-injured hand, which directly related to an increase in thickness in the right side of the brain," study researcher Nicolas Langer of the University of Zurich, Switzerland, said in a statement. "These structural changes in the brain are associated with skill transfer from the right hand to the left hand."

The study's findings may be applied to better understand or adjust rehabilitation therapy for people who have suffered strokes or other illnesses or injuries that affect one side of the body, according to the researchers.

"One type of therapy [for stroke victims] restrains the unaffected, or 'good,' arm to strengthen the affected arm and help the brain learn new pathways," Langer said. "This study shows that there are both positive and negative effects of this type of treatment."

The researchers noted that the study did not look at whether the decreases in the amount of gray and white matter in the left side of the brain would be permanent, or if the brain matter would return to its previous size once the cast came off and the injured arm began to be used again.

"Further studies should examine whether using a restraint for stroke patients is really a necessity for improving arm and hand movement," Langer said. "Our results also support the current trauma surgery guidelines stating that an injured arm or leg should be immobilized 'as short as possible, as long as necessary.'"

The study will be published in the Jan. 17 issue of the journal Neurology.

Weatherman loses $43K, his job

By The Hollywood Reporter

Philadelphia weatherman John Bolaris lost $43,712.25, his job and, arguably, his dignity from one fateful trip to Miami Beach.

'Fast Five,' 'Hangover II,' 'Thor' Top List of Year's Most Pirated Movies

?Following a real-life version of Warner Bros.? "The Hangover"?films, Bolaris shopped his story -- at least what he could remember of it -- to several outlets including Playboy, which published a salacious tell-all detailing how the weatherman was drugged by the Russian mob while on vacation. Bolaris was suspended by his employer, Fox 29, for allegedly leaking the story to the Philadelphia?Daily News. In late December, he was officially let go.

PHOTOS: 'The Hangover' Stars Before They Were Famous

According to the Playboy article (via Gawker), the situation occurred in March 2010 during the course of two days. On the first night, two beautiful European women at a sushi bar approached Bolaris. ?I?m a guy,? he is quoted as saying. ?There was the thought that I might get laid. ? I was used to girls in Philly coming on to me aggressively once they found out I was John Bolaris, the TV weatherman.?

After taking shots with the women, Bolaris claimed to have ?lost all concept of time? before waking up alone as the proud owner of a painting of ?a woman?s head ? not the head of a woman I?d be attracted to.?

Receiving a call from his new friends, who informed him that he had purchased the painting at an auction, Bolaris agreed to join them for another night of partying.

STORY: Bradley Cooper Eager to Start Shooting 'Hangover III,' Says Todd Phillips Is Working on Script

The next morning, Bolaris woke up alone with no memory of the previous night and the painting nowhere to be found. He returned to Philadelphia, only to discover he had purchased ?bottles of champagne every 15 minutes or so,? including a $2,500 bottle of Cristal Vintage and a $3,120 bottle of Dom Perignon. Additionally, he had used his American Express card to buy a $2,000 tin of caviar. The painting? $2,500 plus a $500 tip. The grand total came to $43,712.25, with AmEx refusing to reverse the charges.

Eventually, the FBI opened an investigation and indicted 17 members of the Russian mob, who are accused of scamming at least 88 men in South Beach. AmEx settled Bolaris? tab and paid him a reported $100,000 in damages.

A spokeswoman for the news station told Philly.com that the parting was ?mutually agreed upon??once Bolaris??tale hit the mainstream media.

What is Nigeria's Boko Haram? 5 things to know

Their official name, Jama?atul Ahlu Sunna Lidda?Awati wal Jihad, or the People Committed to the Prophet?s Teachings for Propagation and Jihad, illustrates this group?s primary focus as a center for resistance against the Nigerian government, and what many northern Nigerians see as the dominant role that Christian Nigerians play in Nigerian politics.

Many northerners nicknamed the group, Boko Haram, or ?Western education is a sin? because of the group?s belief that Western influences in education, media, and values, have a corrupting effect on traditional Islamic societies.

Boko Haram draws its membership primarily from clerics, university students, and unemployed youth from the north.

It?s estimated that 70 percent of Nigerians live on less than $1.25 a day, but poverty is more prevalent up north (far from Nigeria?s oil fields and agricultural areas). Some 75 percent of northerners live in poverty, compared with 27 percent of southerners. The great disparity between haves and have-nots, between north and south, appears to be one major draw for recruitment.

Its original leader, Mohammad Yusuf, who founded the group in 2002, was killed in police custody in 2009. His former deputy, Abubakar bin Mohammad Shekau, now leads the organization.

While Boko Haram has about 300 fighters, the International Institute for Strategic Studies said in a recent report that ?the extent of the violence (since 2009) showed that Boko Haram was capable of mobilizing thousands of people and was better trained and armed than government forces had thought.?

(AP Photo/Richard Drew, File)

(AP) ? Stocks slipped in early trading Thursday after an increase in unemployment claims countered optimism about strong bond auctions in Italy and Spain.

The Dow Jones industrial average is off 40 points at 12,410 just after 10 a.m.

The S&P 500 index is down 4 points at 1,288. Energy and banking stocks led the market lower. The Nasdaq composite fell 9 points to 2,700.

Weekly unemployment benefits spiked last week, mostly because companies let go of thousands of holiday hires. Also, retail sales barely rose in December and were lower than analysts were expecting.

Chevron Corp. led the Dow average lower with a 2 percent decline. The world's second-largest publicly traded oil company said late Wednesday that its fourth-quarter income will be "significantly" below its results in the prior quarter because of narrower profit margins on refining and selling fuels. Refinery volumes fell both in the U.S. and overseas.

European markets mostly rose after Italy and Spain held highly successful bond auctions, easing worries about Europe's debt crisis. Italy's benchmark stock index rose 1.8 percent.

In Italy's first bond auction of the new year, the country was able to sell one-year bonds at a rate of just 2.735 percent, less than half the 5.95 percent rate it had to pay last month. That's a signal that investors are becoming more confident in Italy's ability to pay its debts.

Spain was able to raise double the amount of money it had sought to raise in its own bond sale as demand for its debt was strong. Both auctions were seen as important tests of investor sentiment.

Investors have been worried that Italy and Spain, the third- and fourth-largest countries in the euro area, might get dragged into the region's debt crisis. Greece, Ireland and Portugal have been forced to get relief from their lenders after their borrowing costs spiked to levels the countries could no longer afford.

The euro rose nearly a penny against the dollar, to $1.28, as worries eased about Europe's financial woes. The currency, which is shared by 17 European countries, fell to a 16-month low against the dollar the day before.

Meanwhile, the two leading European central banks held their interest rates Thursday, with the European Central Bank keeping its rate at 1 percent and the Bank of England maintaining its lending rate at a record low of 0.5 percent.

Among other stocks making big moves:

? Casino operator Wynn Resorts Ltd. fell 5 percent, the biggest drop in the S&P 500 index. The company disclosed in a regulatory filing that its vice chairman has filed a lawsuit against the company. Vice Chairman Kazuo Okada claims that Wynn has refused to give him access to records relating to a $135 million donation the company made to the University of Macau and other matters.

? Home goods seller Williams-Sonoma Inc. dropped 2 percent after it said its fiscal fourth-quarter earnings guidance to a level below what analysts had expected because of holiday-season promotions.

NVIDIA and ASUS tease 7-inch Tegra 3 tablet with ICS and $249 price tag

You know things are about to get crazy when NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang and ASUS Chairman Jerry Shen are onstage at the same time. Here at NVIDIA's CES press conference, the two men just flashed a 7-inch Tegra 3 tablet with Ice Cream Sandwich. And guess what? It's going to cost $249 price! Got that, the same price as the much-slower, lesser-specced Nook Tablet. Given that the point of this brief tease was to prove how inexpensive tablets with current-gen innards can be, the men didn't dally with details like availability or even a product name. If these price wars continue, though, we'd almost rather ASUS takes it time before sending this to market -- who knows what else we're going to see in the $250 range over the coming months?

Update: It seems to be the MeMO 370T we saw earlier today, which means this slab is sporting an 8 megapixel camera, to boot.

Proposal for NRA license plate has foes up in arms

By msnbc.com staff

A lawmaker's proposal to allow Washington state to issue a National Rifle Association special license plate has some critics up in arms.

According to The Seattle Times, state Rep. Dean Takko is sponsoring a bill to create an ?NRA license plate,? with proceeds from the sale going to support hunter firearm safety and education.

"As a hunter out in the woods, I want people to be safe," Takko, a Democrat from Longview who has been an NRA member for more than 20 years, told the Times.

Judging from online comments in response to the Times? story, the proposal faces considerable public backlash.

?All the special design plates have to do with memorializing certain professions, are related to peaceful activities, or related to protecting the environment. The state should not allow an organization that promotes tools of death to freely advertise on state issued license plates,? wrote one reader from Seattle. ?If they want to have a hunter safety plate then they should find an organization that promotes hunter safety not an organization that promotes people being able to own and carry military assault rifles.?

?Bad idea. Regardless of how anyone feels about the NRA, putting any political lobbying organization that is so polarizing for so many on plates is a bad precedent,? wrote another reader from Seattle. ?The slippery slope is apparent. ACLU plates? Family Research Council plates? Where is the line??

But Dave Workman, senior editor of thegunmag.com,?a publication of the Bellevue, Wash.-based Second Amendment Foundation,?? said many people don?t understand the bill?s intent.

"The opponents I think are reacting to the fact that the letters ?N-R-A? are connected to this measure,? he told msnbc.com. ?I don?t think they looked much beyond that.?

The special plates would raise more money for hunter education and firearm safety programs run by the Department of Fish and Wildlife.

?There?s a misperception among some of the opponents that the NRA is simply going to benefit somehow financially from this. That?s not true at all,? Workman said.

Workman acknowledged that the bill faces an uncertain future. He said it?s possible the legislation ?would be much more well received? by the public if it were just a generic Second Amendment-type of bill and not linked directly to the NRA.

The Washington Department of Licensing currently offers 47 different special license plates, according to the Times. They cost up to $45 in addition to standard licensing fees.

Some states, including neighboring Idaho, already offer customized National Rifle Association plates.

Msnbc.com's James Eng contributed to this report.

Rick Perry Would Re-Deploy Troops To Iraq To Prevent Iran Moving In "At The Speed of Light"

If the candidates were wearing the logos of their sponsors, I imagine Rick Perry would have Exxon-Mobil's emblazoned in the place where he currently wears his flag pin. Or Amoco, or whoever it is that funds his campaign when it's clearly gone past its prime.

Perry wasn't given a lot of debate time, so it would appear he memorized a few key paragraphs to make sure he got a sound bite or two. Unfortunately for Governor Perry, ending the Iraq war is something 75% of Americans support, regardless of party affiliation. That's overwhelming, which is why it's shocking to have actually heard him say he would re-deploy troops to Iraq, and to claim the war in Iraq ended because of the President's "lefty liberal base", a perjorative term that he spat out in the middle of his speech. Here's what he said:

PERRY: Well, I think that you have to -- I would send troops back into Iraq, because I will tell you...

STEPHANOPOULOS: Now?

PERRY: I -- I think we start talking with the Iraqi individuals there. The idea that we allow the Iranians to come back into Iraq and take over that country, with all of the treasure, both in blood and money, that we have spent in Iraq, because this president wants to kowtow to his liberal, leftist base and move out those men and women. He could have renegotiated that timeframe.

I think it is a huge error for us. We?re going to see Iran, in my opinion, move back in at literally the speed of light. They?re going to move back in, and all of the work that we?ve done, every young man that has lost his life in that country will have been for nothing because we?ve got a president that does not understand what?s going on in that region.

Perry clearly speaks for the 25% of Americans who are either clueless, greedy, or bloodthirsty. I'm not sure which. It's classic neocon framing, though, particularly the part about "treasure, both in blood and money," as if lives were equal to money. Perhaps it's too simplistic to say so, given the neocon belief that US-style democracy should dominate political systems worldwide, but can we just be honest and say it's about the oil? I somehow doubt Rick Perry cares as much about lives as he does about treasure, and clearly he's upset that we aren't putting our greedy little hands on the treasure.

By the way, it wasn't just Rick Perry saber-rattling over Iran. Newt Gingrich agreed, though he wouldn't re-deploy to Iraq. He'd just send troops straight on into Iran, though not at the "speed of light." And of course, for the same reasons as Perry:

Here?s the key thing to remember. If you?re -- if you?re worried about the Iranians in Iraq, develop a strategy to replace the Iranian dictatorship and Iraq will be fine. If you want to stop Wahhabism, get an American energy policy so no American president ever again bows to a Saudi king, and then you can put pressure on the Saudis, because you have enough American energy. Stop...

The comment about bowing is a not-so-veiled effort to slam our current President for actually respecting other countries' protocols. But again, Newt Gingrich focuses on energy policy and regime change, as if it's our responsibility (and right) to do so.

Surprisingly, Ron Paul didn't just jump all over them and outright condemn the warmongering. I saw that as a golden opportunity for him, but he sort of hedged and danced around it:

But today, the -- the American Navy picked up a bunch of fishermen, Iranian fishermen, that had been held by -- by the pirates, and released them. And they were so welcome, it was just a wonderful thing to happen. This is the kind of stuff we should deal with, not putting on sanctions. Sanctions themselves are -- always leads up to war. And that?s what we?re doing.

Eastern Europe is going to be destabilized if they don?t have this [Iranian] oil. And this just pushes Iran right into the hands of the Chinese. So our policy may be well intended, but it has a lot of downside, a lot of unintended consequences, and, unfortunately, blowback.

Mitt Romney does what Mitt Romney always does, which is to avoid the question entirely and turn it into a bashfest of our current President. He's not really even worth the quote because he really never answered the direct question. But Rick Santorum is on the record as being hungry for war with Iran. Here is his response:

The Iranian people love America because we stand up for the truth and say -- and call evil, which is what Ahmadinejad and the mullahs are, we call evil what it is. That?s why they admire us, because we tell the truth.

Now we just have to have a president that helps them to do what is necessary, which is to turn that regime out.

So of the five candidates on stage, one would re-deploy troops immediately to Iraq, and two clearly support regime change. The front-runner won't give a straight answer so we don't know what he thinks, and the one anti-war candidate on the stage spoke against sanctions but wouldn't come down hard on regime change.

Does anyone think any of these men should be given the code to our own nuclear weapons (which I wish we'd get rid of sooner rather than later)?

This exchange wins my prize for the most shocking and depressing moment of the ABC New Hampshire debate. They are shameless, arrogant men, who aren't content to meddle in the lives of citizens, particularly female and gay citizens, but have no problem publicly admitting a hankering to meddle in the lives of other countries with sovereign governments.

Lies and greed, moving at the speed of light.

University Of California vs. Asian Americans?

As the University of California looks to shore up its shaky financial situation in the face of decreased funding from Sacramento, the system's effort to increase the proportion of out-of-state students has had an interesting effect--pushing out Asian American students at the expense of Chinese ones.

According to a Bloomberg report, in the years since administrators instructed U.C. San Diego to bring in more out-of-state students, the number of Chinese students enrolled at the Southern California university has seen a twelve-fold increase.

During the same period, the total number of Asian American students in the entire system decreased by just under 30 percent.

Tuition for in-state students is subsidized by the university (at least by a significantly higher degree than for other students) and can cost half to two-thirds as much as the rate for students hailing from outside the Golden State.

Last year, non-resident students brought some $80 million into U.C. Berkeley's coiffeurs, up from $54 million the previous year.

The total number of out-of-state students has steadily increased in recent years. Students paying out-out-state tuition made up 14 percent total U.C. student body in 2011, 11 percent in 2010 and nine percent in 2009.

"The state is not a fully reliable partner in funding anymore," UCLA Provost Scott Waugh told Bloomberg. "If we're going to give California residents the education they want and deserve, we need non-Californians to help pay for it."

The most recent California state budget cut funding to the U.C. system by $650 million. These cuts also triggered a 9.6 percent tuition hike to be piled on top of another long-planned eight percent increase.

While this drop in the number of Asian Americans is significant, it hasn't been universal across the system. As a blogger at 8asians.com noted, "some of the numbers don't add up. Asian American enrollment at U.C. Berkeley from 2009 to 2010 dropped from 22 percent (a 314 student decline), Chinese student enrollment increased during the same time from 55 to 96. White enrollment dropped 29 percent."

This decrease in the number of Asian American students is soon to be followed by the implementation of another policy change that will likely further reduce their numbers from an all time of high of around 40 percent of total U.C. undergraduates only a few years ago.

The new policy, passed by the Board of Regents in 2009 and scheduled to go into effect later this year, ditches the requirement that all applicants take two SAT Subject Tests (formerly known at SAT II tests) and also reduce the number of students guaranteed admission to solely based on grades and test scores.

"I like to call it affirmative action for whites," said Ling-chi Wang, a retired U.C. Berkeley professor told USA Today."I think it's extremely unfair to Asian-Americans on the one hand and underrepresented minorities on the other."

An internal study found that this change alone could cut Asian American admissions by up to 20 percent.

The number of Asian Americans in the U.C. system increased rapidly during the 1990s after California voters passed Proposition 209, which barred all state universities from considering race in admissions. Conversely, the number of non-Asian minorities admitted plummeted. In 2009 alone, U.C. Berkeley saw a nearly 55 percent drop.

Nationwide, the number of students coming in from China has skyrocketed in recent years. In the 2010-11 academic year, one in five international students came from China.

Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher

By Virginia Blackburn

I WILL not be going to see The Iron Lady.

No matter how good Meryl Streep is, she is not a patch on the real thing. Moronic feminists constantly denigrate Margaret Thatcher for not doing more to help the sisterhood ? what rubbish.

Mrs T became prime minister when I was still at school, remained there throughout my university years and continued to dominate the country as I first made my way in the workplace. It came as a bit of a shock the fi rst time, as an adult, I heard the PM referred to as ?he?.

Think what you will of Maggie ? and I think she saved Britain ? but no one has ever said she did the right or wrong thing because she was a woman. It was her politics she was judged on, not her gender.

Every female in the world owes her. Including Meryl Streep.

Indiana braces for Wisconsin-style showdown over union bill - again

Indiana Democrats are refusing to allow the state?s House to come to session because of the bill. They want Republicans to agree to hold public hearings on the issue around the state.

Democrats in Indiana are replaying a scene from last year by refusing to allow the state?s House to come to session and vote on a controversial bill that they say will weaken unions.

The Indiana House returned Wednesday for a 10-week session. On the agenda: a so-called right-to-work bill that would ban negotiations between a union and company if workers are forced to pay fees for representation.

Democrats did not show up for the legislative session and instead remained in private meetings, which prevented the Republican majority from having a quorum to start the session. Indiana law is written so a quorum is needed for every vote, whether or not it involves spending money.

Democrats are hesitant to call their actions a walkout, a term that was last year when the same legislative proposal prompted the same lawmakers to flee to Illinois for five weeks. They returned once Republicans removed the bill from a vote in the 2011 legislative session.

This time around, Democrats will not return until Republicans agree to hold public hearings around the state, says minority leader Pat Bauer of South Bend. ?It?s a filibuster until we can get the truth. For now, it?s about the bill,? Representative Bauer told reporters Wednesday.

Bauer said that while their actions are indefinite, he and his colleagues have no intention of exiting the state.

How long they stay away is up to the public, says Brian Vargus, a political scientist at Indiana University in Indianapolis.

?You can?t tell exactly how far [the Democrats] will go until you see more of the public reaction to them not showing up again,? Mr. Vargus says. ?It?s impossible if it comes to any kind of vote. The only hope they have is if it goes before the public.?

Republicans are promoting the right-to-work bill as a job creator that will drive businesses to the state for a business-friendly environment. They also say the bill gives workers a choice on whether they want to commit to union dues.

Democrats see the bill as a backhanded way to weaken unions. In a statement Wednesday, Bauer said the current legislation package proposed by Republicans is staked on ?an anti-paycheck, anti-job bill that will lower wages, cut pensions and benefits, and increase workplace deaths.?

If the right-to-work bill does become law, Indiana would become the 23rd state with such legislation ? though it would be the first in America?s traditional manufacturing belt. The last state to adopt this kind of rule was Oklahoma in 2001.

Republicans say that the Democrats? actions are stalling votes on other important issues including education, a statewide smoking ban, a phaseout of the state?s inheritance tax, and a $1.3 billion overhaul of mass transit in central Indiana.

The Democrats? filibuster is a ?childish tactic,? Rob Beiswenger, executive director of the Indiana Right to Work Committee, told a local television station Wednesday. ?Not only are [Democrats] stopping the right-to-work bill; they are stopping every single bill.?

For each day in session that Democrats miss, they face a $1,000 fine per lawmaker ? a penalty that became law last year following that exodus. Republicans have yet to say if they will issue the fines.

The call by Democrats to hold public meetings is not unwarranted, according to a poll conducted this past November by Ball State University?s Bowen Center for Public Affairs in Muncie, Ind. It found that while 27 percent of Indiana residents support right to work and 24 percent oppose it, 48 percent are undecided.

New Guidelines Issued for Combining HIV, Seizure Meds (HealthDay)

WEDNESDAY, Jan. 4 (HealthDay News) -- Physicians need to take care when prescribing seizure medication to HIV/AIDS patients to prevent harmful interactions between drugs, experts warn.

The cautionary note from the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) has led to the issuance of a new AAN guideline, which was developed in consultation with the International League Against Epilepsy.

"It is important that patients know exactly which drugs they are taking and provide that information to all prescribing health care providers caring for them," lead guideline author Dr. Gretchen L. Birbeck, of Michigan State University in East Lansing, said in an AAN news release.

"Doctors may need to watch and adjust drug doses in people with HIV/AIDS who take seizure drugs," added Birbeck, who is also an AAN fellow.

Seizures and related disorders are not uncommon among HIV patients, according to Birbeck and colleagues. It is estimated that at least 10 percent of HIV patients experience seizures, they noted.

In the new guideline, which is published in the Jan. 4 online editions of both Neurology and Epilepsia, the research team cautioned that effectiveness of either set of drugs can be compromised when specific seizure medications are taken alongside certain HIV/AIDS treatments. Increased toxicity is another potential issue.

For example, levels of certain HIV medications -- such as phenytoin, phenobarbital and carbamazepine -- actually drop off when they come in contact with seizure drugs. The risk: an HIV drug regimen might fail, the authors pointed out.

One way Birbeck's team hopes to mitigate against such risk is to outline the correct dosages of seizure drugs. They noted that dangerous drug interactions may be avoidable if medications are prescribed in the right amounts.

The team also acknowledged that the threat of harmful drug interactions is highest where drug choices are the most curtailed. That means that patients in poorer countries, where most HIV/AIDS patients now live, are particularly vulnerable to this dynamic.

"Future research should target epilepsy and HIV/AIDS drug combinations where choices are limited, such as in developing countries, to better understand the risk of these drug interactions," Birbeck said in the news release.

Spoleto Festival USA unveils lineup for new season (AP)

CHARLESTON, S.C. ? The American premiere of the Philip Glass opera "Kepler," a concert by vocalist k.d. lang, and the return of Dublin's Gate Theatre highlight the 36th season of the Spoleto Festival USA this spring.

Chamber music, acrobatic performances and orchestral concerts are also on the schedule for the festival that will light up 13 venues including theaters, churches and open-air sites from May 25 through June 10.

The festival, which released the lineup this weekend, features more than 140 shows by 60 groups and performers.

To commemorate Glass' 75th birthday and his long relationship with Spoleto, the festival is staging a full production of "Kepler," which in this country has only been presented in concert form. The opera is about astronomer Johannes Kepler.

A second Spoleto opera is the American premiere of "The Phoenix Pavilion" by contemporary Chinese composer Guo Wenjing. It features an orchestra of four traditional Chinese instruments playing with musicians playing 11 traditional Western instruments.

This year's festival includes concerts by Grammy Award-winning lang and well-known gospel singer Mavis Staples as well as the Rebirth Brass Band from New Orleans, and "Doghouse" by Jonny Greenwood of the rock band Radiohead.

Dublin's Gate Theatre will make its eighth appearance at Spoleto with a production of Noel Coward's "Hay Fever." The British theater collaborative known as 1927, which appeared at Spoleto in 2008, is back with "The Animals and Children Took to the Streets." The production is a dark fairy tale told with acting, music and animation.

The theater offerings also include Jack Hitt, who performs on public radio, and Mike Daisey in one-man shows.

The dance lineup includes performances by the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and the Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet.

In the visual arts, the festival offers "Return to the Sea: Saltworks," works crafted entirely of salt by Japanese artist Motoi Yamamoto. The works are the artist's effort to keep alive the memory of his sister who died of brain cancer at 24.

The Spoleto Festival also features jazz, choral performances, the popular chamber music series and the festival orchestra in a contemporary music program. The orchestra features 83 musicians selected in nationwide auditions.

The internationally known arts festival was started in Charleston in 1977 by composer Gian Carlo Menotti as a companion to his Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto, Italy.

He left the Charleston festival almost two decades ago in a dispute over his successor and died in 2007 at age 95, still estranged from the America festival.

Stanford University Silicon Valley Archives offer window into Apple origins

Source: www.artdaily.org --- Friday, December 30, 2011
PALO ALTO, CA. (AP).- In the interview, Steve Wozniak and the late Steve Jobs recall a seminal moment in Silicon Valley history ? how they named their upstart computer company some 35 years ago. "I remember driving down Highway 85," Wozniak says. "We're on the freeway, and Steve mentions, 'I've got a name: Apple Computer.' We kept thinking of other alternatives to that name, and we couldn't think of anything better." Adds Jobs: "And also remember that I worked at Atari, and it got us ahead of Atari in the phonebook." The interview, recorded for an in-house video for company employees in the mid-1980s, was among a storehouse of materials Apple had been collecting for a company museum. But in 1997, soon after Jobs returned to the company, Apple officials contacted Stanford University and offered to ...
